What's in a Name?

Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow Cabin and Grounds

Come to Little Corn Island and step back in time on an idylic tropical island in the Caribbean Sea. Here it is like the Caribbean was 60 years ago. Close your eyes, listening to the waves and you can easily imagine being stranded on a tropical island (but, with at least a few creature comforts). Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow’s restaurant (The Turned Turtle) and cabins are named after famous shipwrecks, lost jungle explorers (our garden located master suites) and overturned boats in honor of the stranded retro feel.

Beach located “Master Suite Gulliver's”are our largest ammenity filled beach front Bungalows, there are four identical bungalows named:

Master Suite Gulliver Interior

GULLIVER:

The cabin is named after the book, Gulliver’s Travels, whose full title is “Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts”. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships, the book is a prose by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift that is both a satire on human nature and the “travelers’ tales” literary subgenre. It is Swift’s best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. He claimed that he wrote Gulliver’s Travels “to vex the world rather than divert it”.

Shackleton:

In 1914 famous explorer Ernest Shackleton set off to cross the arctic via the south pole. Stranded in the early ice pack, his ship the Endurance was eventually crushed. He and his crew endured a long polar winter on the ice, an 800 mile open boat journey and were eventually rescued. One of the all time great leadership and survival tales. You will be comforted to know, that on LCI the temperature always seems to be about 82 degrees F. So unlike Shackleton, you won’t need your walrus hide coat.

Wilson:

You will probably recall Cast Away, the 2000 movie with Tom Hanks. Remember his best friend, Wilson? Yes, if you stay in “Wilson” you will be staying in a cabin named after a partially deflated yet loyal volleyball!

Selkirk:

The story of “Robinson Crusoe” (authored by Daniel Defoe in 1719) has since been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called “Más a Tierra”, now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966.

Beach located “Master Suite Crusoe's”are our second nicest beach front Bungalow, there are two identical ones named:

Robinson:

The cabin name is based on the 1812 novel “Der Schweizerische Robinson” (or the Swiss Robinson by Johan David Wyss). More widely known as the tales of the “Swiss Family Robinson” who are of course, like you, stranded on a remote tropical island but without the emu’s.

Crusoe:

The cabin is named after “Robinson Crusoe”. The original book (written in 1719) is an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer)—a castaway who spends twenty-eight years on a remote tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. Don’t worry though, while pirates used to frequent Little Corn the only people you now will encounter are friendly islanders and a few tourists.

“Standard Crusoe's” are two identical beach front Bungalows that feature both a queen and a double bed:

Gilligan:

Gilligan’s Island is an American sitcom created and produced by Sherwood Schwartz for American television. The show featured “Gilligan, the Skipper too, a millionaire and his wife, a movie star the professor and Mary Ann here on Gilligans Isle”. The show followed the comic adventures of seven castaways as they attempted to survive the island on which they had been shipwrecked (the “SS Minnow” shipwreck is just down the beach from us). Comic adventures much like what you will see here at Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow while you stay with us:)

Survivor:

The long running “outwit, outplay, outlast” TV series is the namesake of “Survivor” cabin. Good news for guests who stay in “Survivor” though, the beds are more comfortable, hopefully the food is better and when it rains, you won’t get wet (unless you want to) and you will probably make many new friends. Bad news though, survive your week long vacation and you don’t win a million dollars 🙁

“Garden Located Master Suite Gulliver's” the nicest, largest, most private cabins that are totally screened in, of which there are two:

Livingston Master Suite Gulliver Garden View - Interior

Livingstone & Fawcett Z

Searching for the source of the Nile river, Dr. Livingstone was lost for years in the African Jungle. In 1871, Henry Morton Stanley famously found the lost Doc and greeted him with the iconic line “Dr. Livingstone I presume?”. Unlike the good Doctor, when you stay in Livingstone you won’t be lost and you will be staying in relative comfort.

Colonel Percy Fawcett set off into the Amazon Jungle at the turn of the 20th century looking for the legendary “Lost City of Z” (Fawcett Z).  During his third search, rumour has it that he discovered the city and decided to stay it was so fabulous (he was never to be seen again after that third trip).  Years later, his son went in search of his dad.  Only to never return again (rumour has it he found his dad at the Lost City of Z).  The good news is that your bungalow, Fawcett Z is only a 30 second stroll across the sand to your “lost city of Caribbean Sea”.

Turned Turtle Restaurant and Bar:

Turned Turtle Bar Restaurant
Turned Turtle Restaurant and Bar on Little Corn Island

Our restaurant and bar “The Turned Turtle” is named after what your overturned boat looks like right before you wash up on the shore of our remote desert island. Old time sailor men say an overturned boat, floating in the sea has “Turned Turtle” (looking like an Turtle Shell) thus potentially shipwrecking it’s crew here, at Little Corn Beach and Bungalow. Possibly though, you might feel a little “Turned Turtle” after enjoying one or more of our famous Pina Coladas or Margaritas! And no . . . we don’t serve Turtle at the Turned Turtle.
